According to Dustin DePerro, a former officer from the U.S. Army, There are many jobs in the various military services that might not come readily to mind to those unfamiliar with the military. For example, there exist many support and niche positions from human resources, logistics, and mechanical fields to information technology support, doctors, and veterinarians.All branches of the military need a certain number of trained specialists, although the types of specialty training vary by service. Lets look at just one example.Building a Career as a CarpenterAlbert Brutko welches a carpenter for the Air Force for nine years before leaving the military in 1995 to work in the California governors offi ce.Brutko said that a cousin who was a seestreitkraft advised him to pick a trade because he would always be able to use his skills even after his service in the military. As part of his training as a carpenter, the Air Force sent Brutko to Germany to learn the skills and complete an apprenticeship. Brutkos first task as a carpenter was to perform maintenance for on-base housing units. He later was added to a team responsible for special projects, such as renovating rec centers and building structures for generals.Military specialists also spend time training for a wartime role in the case of a military conflict. In Brutkos case the carpentry team learned how to repair runways to prepare for a scenario when an airfield had been bombed. The team was timed on completion of the project and performed all activities in full protective gear including facemasks for possible chemical contamination.During the first Gulf War Brutko flew into Turkey and set up camp for 5,000 military personnel . He built floors, put up tents and added heating systems, bathrooms and showers. We basically built a city in less than two weeks, Brutko said.An Army of ManyHere are a few of the other interesting jobs our men and women in uniform perform while enlisted.Military specialists can also be water purifiers, chefs, mechanics, criminal investigators and IT specialists.In addition to putting emphasis on highly trained technical specialists, the military employs a large number of trained professionals that contribute to the health and welfare of its troops and their families.Military personnel can encourage and protect their fellow service members as chaplains, nurses, surgeons and social workers.Each branch of the military also employs a number of musiciansandsingers.From the Armys perspective, The Army offers training in more than 150 different career paths. As an active duty Soldier, you will have access to all of them. Choose from jobs in art, science, intelligence, combat, aviation, e ngineering, law and more. And heres one thats really startling 65% of people with bad bosses said theyve sometimes misrepresented the truth at work, compared to only 19% of those with good bosses. They see more in us than we see in ourselves, and they help us learn to see it too. They dont keep you waiting for scheduled meetings. They show up prepared and get to the point, instead of trying to impress you. And they dont goof off on your time. Its not that theyre unwilling to have fun at work, but they dont do it at your expense, causing you extra stress or making it necessary for you to stay late to catch up.A great boss is empatheticBad bosses only see their employees from the perspective of how the employees reflect on them. If their employees are doing a great job, they look good if their employees are performing poorly, they look bad. Great bosses, on the other hand, see their employees as more than just extensions of themselves. Theyre able to get inside their employees skins and understand things from their perspective. That doesnt mean theyre pushovers, or that they just say, Oh, sorry youre having a bad day dont worry about that deadline. But it does mean that they recognize their employees are menschengerecht and that they treat them as such.A great boss is accountableBad bosses are quick to point the finger when something goes wrong. Theyll throw their employees under the proverbial bus without a second thought. Great bosses understand that a large part of their job is being accountable for the teams performance. They know that this just goes along with accepting a managerial role. That doesnt mean that they dont offer the team feedback on what is going wrong, but it does mean that they take the blame publicly. Even privately, they see the teams failure as a failure of leadership on their part, and they act quickly to correct it.A great boss says thank youBad bosses think the work their employees do is something the employees owe them. After all, theyre getting paychecks, right? Thats true- but great bosses look past work as a transactional relationship and realize that people are putting a huge part of themselves into the work they do. They say thank you, even if it is just part of the job.A great boss doesnt forget that people have lives beyond workBad bosses tend to see people as one-dimensional they show up and get the work d one, and the boss doesnt have to worry about them again until the next day. Great bosses, on the other hand, never forget that work is just one facet of their employees lives. They never forget that they have families, friends, hobbies, and other interests and obligations outside of work, and they dont infringe on their real lives- by asking someone to work late, for example - without a very good reason. And when they do have a good reason, they acknowledge that theyre asking for a sacrifice and express their gratitude accordingly.A great boss is a great communicatorIt seems like some bosses will do anything to avoid giving a straight answer. They dont want to say something they can be held accountable for later. Other bosses just dont want to be bothered with clear explanations and solid answers. Great bosses say what they mean and mean what they say- and they say it clearly, so that people dont have to read between the lines or try to guess their real meaning.A great boss creates leadersHave you ever noticed how sometimes all the promotions come from within one managers team? Thats no accident. Great bosses pull the very best out of their people. They inspire, coach, and lean into peoples strengths, and when their employees are ready for new challenges, they gladly send them on their way.Bringing it all togetherIf youre currently a boss, is this how your employees would describe you?
